Interpreting the Overview Tab
The Overview tab acts like a simple report card for your email. It gives you a quick, high-level summary of your email's health and shows you where you stand at a glance.
Instead of wading through complex data, the Overview tab flags the most critical factors that affect deliverability. This includes checks for:
- DNS records (like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC)
- IP and domain blacklists
- Technical issues (like a missing unsubscribe header)
Each factor has a clear status. An OK status means everything is working correctly. A WARN status means there is a minor issue you should fix. A BAD status means there is a major problem that needs immediate attention. This makes it easy to see what's working and what needs to be fixed right away.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Log in to your Unspam.email account and run an Email Spam Test.
- After running an Email Spam Test, go to the Dashboard.
- Under Email Spam Test Reports, select a test that you want to view.
- You will be redirected to the Overview tab.
Review each item to understand its impact:
- Score: Your overall spam score. A higher score is better, indicating less risk.
- Domain & IP Blacklists: Checks if your sending domain or IP is on a "naughty list." Being on a blacklist is a major reason emails go to spam.
- SPF, DKIM, DMARC: These are email authentication methods, like a digital passport. They prove you are who you say you are, which is crucial for building trust with email providers.
SPF - Prevent spoofers from sending spam emails from your domain by verifying that your emails originate from a genuine IP address.
DKIM - Avoid being “binned” or blocked with a DKIM key to show contents of your email haven’t been tampered with.
DMARC - Verify your emails are secure with a record of information a recipient should receive, and what they actually receive.
- Reverse DNS: This is a technical check to ensure your sending server is properly configured, which helps verify your identity.
- List-Unsubscribe Header: Checks for a one-click unsubscribe option. Mailbox providers like Gmail favor this, and its absence can hurt your reputation.
- Domain Suffix & Age: Assesses the trustworthiness of your domain. Newer domains are often treated with more suspicion.
- HTML Body Best Practices: Scans your email's code for sloppy formatting that can trigger spam filters.
- Subject Line: Analyzes your subject line for risky words ("Free!", "Act now!") or excessive capitalization that look like spam.
- Broken Links & Short URLs: Checks that all your links work. Broken links provide a poor user experience and can be a spam flag.
- SpamAssassin: This gives you a score from a popular open-source spam filter, showing how it would rate your email.
- Accessibility Checking: Checks if your email is easy to read for people with disabilities, which is an important part of a good user experience.
